There are 2 ways to arrive on this island.....
By plane or by the ferries or the speed boats from Piraeus, Crete, Myconos and the other Aegean islands or even Thessalonica , some days /week....
Where to stay
Most of the tourists prefer to stay on caldera view pensions and hotels or apartments. because of it’s incredible view...
Though few of them, who need to stay longer for summer holidays, or those who need to stay away from the most touristic areas, the funs of pure and authentic Cycladic village they have the choice between picturesque spots all around the island....
I will present you all so you choose the one that is more convenient for you own planning...
Fira
The island’s capital is a busy town, with a superb view in caldera side....
Unfortunately you have to go through to visit the museums or reach the beaches or to visit the banks and take the cable car to go down to the old port for the excursions or the cruise ships...Between 15/7 till 15/9 is the most high spot for traffic problems and I definitely recommend you to avoid staying there in that period!
Firostephani-Imerovigli
One after the other, the capital’s suburbs on the cliff side, is definitely better to stay the whole year!
Finikia –Oia The Northwest spot on the island is definitely much more authentic and preserved but it’s something like 10 km way and few months /year in low season the bus traffic stops right after the sunset so you may need a bike or a car to be independent...
Bourboulos
In the mid way to Fira another typical Cycladic village less touristic than Oia but nothing to do with the pictures of Santorini that have brought you on the island since it is on the back side with no caldera view.
Karterados
Another typical village this time between Fira and Messaria, the island’s central village...
Nothing special again unless the fact that it is in a walking distance from Fira , so you can find pensions in much better deal and much more quiet than Fira town!
Messaria
The central village of the island , it used to be important a century ago and few remains of captain’s houses may look interesting for someone who is seeking different architecture styles on this island...Also few pensions in a better deal and less touristic for those who need to stay closer to the local population’s main villages
Kamari The first tourists village made after the island’s industrial transformation and main target for tour operators and charter flights... Black beach with deep waters sometimes wild enough to watch them from outside! Recently all along the beach side heavy rocks has cut a little of the waves and the water is better for swimming for those who are not used to.....
Many pensions, restaurants and bars like in every touristic village on this planet!
Perissa-Perivolos
16 km
long beach side is the paradise for children [water Park] and summer holidays lovers with clean waters and black beach, probably the best spot on the island...
Many hotels for all budgets, restaurants and bars but far enough from caldera, for those who comes from the other areas and they don’t have a motto or a car.....
The bus mostly are air conditioning and it takes 40-45 minutes to get back in Fira..
In low season the bus schedule is not so good as in high, be sure to ask it on the bus station before you have bad surprises!
Akrotiri What most of today’s visitors ignore is the fact that, everything has started back on the end of ‘60s, when Marinatos has found Akrotiri... The village today is a fisherman’s village with few pensions and 2 beautiful beaches the red and the white [one both reachable by the sea with little boats from Akrotiri beach right after the digs]...
Wineries The presence of grape on the island’s prehistoric flora, besides the tourist industry marks the main island’s agricultural production... Many wineries have opened their doors for tourist’s excursions and wine seems to keep a high reputation in social and religious customs if we only see that the Santorini Visanto is the most wanted red wine for religious use since Byzantine period and almost every village has it’s own grape yards...
Monuments and customs
From myth to history, EVERY GREEK CIVILISATION HAS MARKED IT’S PASSAGE ON THIS
ISLAND ..........
The reason is that Santorini, was, is and always will be, a volcanic and very fertile island were people grow important specimens, according to their civilization!
Besides Akrotiri, ancient Thera on the cliff over Kamari beach is were history begins on the island and where it seeks its name, since Theras was a Dorian king who gave the island’s Greek name and much later the Venetians have change it by giving to the island the name of the first church they have crossed when they have arrived..In Fira , we still have a catholic community from the island’s occupation in Middle Age , like in
Naxos and other Cycladic islands....
Ruins from a castle, are visible in “Skaros” at Imerovigli .The number of churches on the island must be related with emotional effects of living in a volcanic area since Prehistory...
Almost every day, one or more of those, mostly belonging in local families, are celebrating with religious fiestas, where everyone is invited, including tourists!
