| There are 2 short of excursions:
Those who are taken by bus and those by boats towards the craters or Thirasia....
Bus excursion to Pyrgos- Akrotiri
The oldest and most popular excursion of the cruise ships, has been changed due to the falling over the heads of the tourists of a part of the new seal in Akrotiri excavation 2 years ago!
Waiting for the restoration, the bus schedule has changed and instead of the ruins,
you may taste local wines in wineries, specially made for tourists, across the road....
The absolute tourist trap! Definitely to avoid it! Check from our site links to the minister of culture, if Akrotiri excavations are open, before you get on to this tourist trap that keep people away from Fira, instead of visiting the prehistoric museum
and see the frescoes there!
Anything valuable that has been found in Akrotiri is there, waiting for your interest and the local people sensibility, to respect your will and your money!
If the excavation area will open this summer, you may rent a car from 20 euro/day
as much as they ask for a bus excursion per person and visit independently
the prehistoric city or the wineries if you have nothing else to do.....
If you are a couple or even better if you travel with friends, definitely a car rental will cost much less and you may have time to go to the beach in Perivolos, few kilometers away from Akrotiri, instead of loosing valuable holiday’s time, on the bus in such
a traffic, specially the days, many ships arrive on the island ...
Oia
One of the most picturesque villages of , is really polluted every day,by thousands of tourists who arrive every single day during the season, from the cruise ships excursions ,day and evening for the sunset!
Though if you have to choose between 2 different excursions [since lately they propose one that includes Oia-Pyrgos-wineries], I should recommend this one, instead of the first, because the cliff road to Oia is dangerous, for someone ho is not used
to drive in narrow streets with many turns and a lot of traffic, almost all day in full season!
Oia used to be a living picture of a natural beauty and I think that it worth to see at least once in a life time.....The problem is for those ho need to relax and decided to stay there, but for you,
as a day visitors, it will definitely leave a positive impression to repeat.....
Ancient Thera
Few local tourist agents propose a bus visit to ancient Thera, above Kamari beach....
For specialists on human sciences, a combine visit of Akrotiri and ancient Thera could be a very helpful way to realize, through human expression, the passage from prehistoric to ancient Greek civilizations.... The huge phallus dominating the entrance of Apollo temple
in ancient Thera, comparing to the religious image of naked men in Akrotiri but also
the jewellery , lipstick , make up and colorful dresses of women, is a visual testimony
of all those changes did happened in people’s mind , about explaining the birth gift of Nature and the image of our creator.....
Boat excursion to new and old kameni –Thirassia
An interesting sea excursion for those who need to walk in a volcanic area and feel the presence of a continuous volcanic activity but also to swim in
hot springs in the next stop at the new kameni [kameni= burned]....
The third and last stop at Thirasia, the island that it used to be a part of Santorini before the volcanic eruption of 1630 b.C, offers another vision of the caldera and a tavern on the beach
for lunch......
Many different type of boats from wooden ones to yachts, according to the price someone needs to put on it, insure day and evening excursions, some of them including lunch or dinner abroad, some others, a sailing experience... To book in one of those, you can ask at the hotel reception or you may go to the main square where all travel agencies are offering different ones...
You may be taken from your hotel, or you can go down to the old port alone, using the cable car, in some cases, this solution means saving a lot of money! One thing is certain ....If you need to have a boat experience don’t hesitate because it’s worth it even in its simplest way, without being really necessary, to take a luxury one,
or to have lunch or dinner on board....
Ferry connection to Thirassia
If you like small adventures, a little ferry is taking you with your car or motto every day to Thirassia from Athinios port... There are definitely not much to do in a deserted island with only few people staying there, but for those who love nature, it may be a good escape from the crowds on Santorini, for a day or two....There must be a place to stay for a night , but it might be wise to take your sleeping bags with you, just in case, since the island reminds Santorini back on the ‘60s, so there are
no tourism development plans yet for it! What a happiness for some of you, isn’t it?
Ferry connection to Anafi
For the same type of tourists there is another escape this time on the other side of the island: Anafi. Two days per week, a ferry insure the connection with Anafi and those who really seek natural adventures, it may look as a paradise, to escape from cosmopolitan Santorini and find themselves in the past, on a typical Cycladic island for few days.... Ask for the ferry schedule from the travel agents on the island...
Diving, snorkeling or skiing on Santorini
Many diving schools and skiing ones are available on the island in Perivolos, Perissa ,
or Kamari beach...Ask more info from a local travel agent in the main square but also in Perissa or Kamari beach area..
